Founder: Sophia Kim
Sophia Kim is the founder of La Sophia Institute. Her work explores how change reaches people, organizations, cities, and regions through research, field observation, writing, education, and practice.
Sophia Kim is the Founder and Director of La Sophia. Grounded in the arts, sports science, and arts and culture management, she studies and researches the changes in people, organizations, and cities and regions. In particular, she observes and records how changes in technology, industry, organizations, and policy reach people's work, roles, relationships, and lives.
A former national champion in DanceSport, she trained in the UK and Italy. She went on to experience a wide range of people and fields through international adjudication, educational institution management, cultural arts programming, and developing movement-based programs for Parkinson's patients, individuals with developmental disabilities, seniors, and wheelchair users.
Today, she looks at how the advance of AI and technology, changes in industry and organizations, and shifts in aging and demographics reach people's work, roles, relationships, and lives. Reading domestic and international research, policy, industry movements, and field cases together, she continuously documents change in people, organizations, cities, and regions.
These observations and research are recorded and shared through Sophia Note and the Newsletter, and carried forward into the research and development of Human OS, Organization OS, City OS, and Gyeongsang OS.
Her interest lies not in people being carried along by change, but in understanding the conditions that let people keep their own rhythm and direction even amid change.
Questions about La Sophia.
- Q1. What does La Sophia research?
La Sophia studies the changes in people, organizations, and the cities and regions we live in. We observe and record how changes in technology, industry, organizations, and policy reach people's work, roles, relationships, and lives. One question runs through all of this research.
“How does change reach people?”
- Q2. Why do you study people, organizations, and cities and regions together?
Because people's lives cannot be explained by their individual state alone. When technology changes, work changes; when organizations change, roles and relationships change; and changes in industry and policy affect jobs and life in a region.
La Sophia studies each of these separately, while also looking at how change across different layers ultimately reaches people's lives.
- Q3. What does La Sophia mean by “change”?
We look broadly at change in AI and technology, industry and work, organizations and leadership, aging and demographics, and policy and cities and regions.
Rather than following every trend, we focus on what that change actually means for people's work and lives.
- Q4. What does Human research look at?
It looks at how a person's state shifts amid change, and how they regulate, recover, and adapt again.
Rather than separating body and mind, we look together at sleep, movement, breath, life context, and the rhythm of daily life, researching how people understand their own state and respond to change.
- Q5. What does Organization research look at?
It looks at how changes in technology, AI, and the industry environment reshape an organization's work, roles, information, decision-making, collaboration, and leadership.
In particular, we observe how organizational change does not end with a new system or technology, but arrives in the form of real changes to members' work and roles.
- Q6. What does City & Region research look at?
It looks at what changes in industry, technology, investment, infrastructure, and policy leave behind in cities and regions, and how they change people's work and lives.
We continuously observe change across Busan and the wider Gyeongsang region, comparing domestic and international city and regional cases when needed. Rather than applying another region's success directly, we look at the conditions and differences each region has of its own.
- Q7. What are Human OS, Organization OS, City OS, and Gyeongsang OS?
They are research systems La Sophia is building to continuously observe, record, and judge each area of change.
Human OS looks at a person's state and regulation/recovery, Organization OS at change in work and organizations, City OS at change and judgment in cities, and Gyeongsang OS at regional change across Busan, Ulsan, Daegu, Gyeongnam, and Gyeongbuk.
Rather than presenting a fixed conclusion, we operate it as a system that we continuously test and update through research and fieldwork.
- Q8. What does La Sophia mean by “state reading”?
It is a way of continuously examining what state a person, organization, city, or region is currently in and what is changing, rather than judging them by a single score or a fragment of information.
The information and methods differ by subject, but the same principle applies throughout: distinguish verified facts from interpretation, and look at the context and connections of change together.
- Q9. Why do you see regulation and recovery as important?
In Human research, life is not seen as remaining in the same state. As work, relationships, health, and environment change, a person's state changes too.
What matters is not maintaining a good state at all times, but the ability to notice one's own changes and regulate and recover when needed in order to keep going.
This is the starting point of “From endurance to regulation.”
- Q10. What is MOM Care?
MOM Care is La Sophia's practice framework for noticing one's own state and finding a rhythm of regulation and recovery in daily life, using music, breath, movement, and its own set of practices.
Where Human OS is the structure that reads state and context to support the next judgment, MOM Care is one of the practices available to use in daily life once that judgment is made.
- Q11. Does La Sophia provide medical services?
No. La Sophia is not a medical institution and does not diagnose or treat disease. Our Human research and programs do not replace medical judgment either.
When medical evaluation or treatment is needed, we advise prioritizing an appropriate medical institution or qualified professional.
- Q12. How are Sophia Notes different from the Newsletter?
Sophia Notes are a research notebook recording the questions, material, and thoughts we discover through study and observation.
The Newsletter selects the most important of these themes, connects multiple sources and observations, and looks a little more deeply at a single question. Rather than delivering a lot of information quickly, it aims to be writing worth returning to over time.
- Q13. How does La Sophia conduct its research?
We look together at domestic and international papers and research, policy and public data, industry material, and field cases.
We distinguish verified facts from interpretation, avoid generalizing from a single case, and revisit our own thinking whenever new material or fieldwork emerges.
La Sophia values the process of observing, recording, comparing, and questioning again.
- Q14. How can I work with La Sophia?
We work with companies, institutions, universities, public organizations, and regional projects on research, lectures, learning programs, and field collaboration.
Key themes include change in people and organizations, AI and the future of work, leadership and regulation/recovery, and cities and regions. If you're interested in collaborating, let us know the audience, purpose, expected number of participants and schedule, and the question you'd like to explore together, and we'll discuss the best approach.

Sophia Kim
La Sophia
- Q1. La Sophia
- Q4. Human
- Q6. City & Region
- Q7. Human OS, Organization OS, City OS, Gyeongsang OS
- Q10. MOM Care
Sophia Note
